In honor of the coming holiday of Shavuos, we are remembering the following people:
Dovid HaMelech (King David) a”h,
Batsheva HaMalkah (Queen Batsheva) a”h,
Ruth haMoaviah (Ruth the Moabite), a”h and
the late Rebbetzin Batsheva Esther Kanievsky, a”h.
Rebbetzin Batsheva Esther Kanievsky, zt”l
Rebbetzin Batsheva Esther Kanievsky, zt”l (remembering the righteous for a blessing), was a pillar of chesed (loving kindness) who showed remarkable love and care for her people from all walks of life, ages, and stations throughout her life. The Rebbetzin was the wife of the Gadol Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, sh’lita (may he live for many good days, Amen), in Bnei Brak, Israel, and the daughter of the Gadol Maran HaGaon Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, zt”l , the Posek Gadol (Decisor of Jewish law) in Jerusalem, Israel. The Rebbetzin had many wonderful middos (character traits) of which we can learn to emulate, but I am going to focus on her tznius (Jewish modesty) in this article. As a modest dressmaker, I am drawn to her signature Jabot which she wore in many of her garments. I don’t know who her seamstress is, but I am designing a particular Jabot collar extension which I am dedicating in her memory. I will call it “The Batsheva Jabot.” Please read on.
“Each girl should accept on herself to daven (pray) with concentration and to study two halachos (laws) regarding proper speech, because this prevents many tragedies and brings much salvation, and obviously to be very careful that one should be dressed with tznius (Jewish modesty) ..,” the Rebbetzin addressed a letter to seminary girls.
In this article, I will show you how to sew the Batsheva Jabot, which is a collar extension that can be attached at the garment neckline.
